Golf Handicap Explained - What is a Golf Handicap And What Does it Mean?

By Jack D A Brown

If you are thinking of starting or have just started to play this beautiful game of Golf, then I am sure that you have so many questions that you want answers too. I will at least help to answer a couple of those questions for you on this page: 'What is a Golf Handicap?' and 'What does a Golf Handicap Mean?'

I understand that for most beginners the Golf Handicap can seem quite complex and confusing to start with, but once you get the basics, it is really quite simple and makes complete sense, as I will explain below! It can start to get a bit trickier when you look at Calculating Golf Handicaps or Golf Handicap Adjustment though!

Firstly let me explain that Golf is a game that is played over 18 holes and within those 18 holes there are 3 different types of holes. Par 3's, which are short holes and can generally be reached with just one shot, Par 4's, which are longer and generally can be reached with two shots and Par 5's, which are longer again and can generally be reached in 3 shots.

Most Golf courses will be made up of mainly Par 4 golf holes with 2 or 3 Par 3's and 2 or 3 Par 5's, so the average Par for 18 holes will normally be 72.

Golf Handicap Explained!! the Simple Answers to 'What is a Golf Handicap?' and 'What does a Golf Handicap Mean?' In simple terms a Handicap is a numerical measurement of an Amateurs playing ability and is used to create a Net Score from the number of strokes actually played, or put another way, it is the number of Strokes that a Golfer receives and is able to remove from his overall Gross Score at the end of the round, i.e. the higher your handicap is, the more strokes you can remove from your overall Gross Score at the end of the round.

This makes it a great system that allows Golfers of all skill to compete on a level playing field, so therefore, it doesn't matter whether you have just started the game or have been playing for years, you will be able to enjoy healthy competition with whomever you are playing with.

The better the Golfer is, the lower the Handicap they will have. It is generally accepted that the Maximum Golf Handicap allowed for men is 28 and for women 36. So when you first start to play Golf, you will more than likely start off with a Handicap of 28 (men) or 36 (women), which means if you are playing against someone more experienced and who is playing off of a 10 handicap for example, you will be allowed 18 more shots (men) or 26 more shots (women) than them, per round.

So if the 10 Handicap Golfer takes 82 strokes to complete a round of Golf on a Course that is Par 72 and you take 100 (men) or 108 (women) then you have (in the eyes of the Handicapping system) both played to your Handicaps and have had an equally good round of Golf!

Golf Handicap & Course Management

By Kevin I Phillips

It's a Sunday morning in the Pro Shop at my Golf Club and I am handing out scorecards for the weekly golf competition, when in walks Jim, a club member bemoaning his luck on the golf course. I asked him what's wrong and he replied that they should dig up the 13th hole. I can never make a par there he says, it always messes up my scorecard along with a few other holes I could mention.

I knew Jim to have a mid to high handicap so I asked him exactly what it was he was playing off these days, I play off a 17 handicap he said. Just to put you in the picture The 13th Hole at our golf course is a 368yd par 4 with a stroke index of 2. So I asked Jim what do you think your par is for that hole? It's a par 4 Kevin you know it is, he replied. It is for me I said but what's your par? He looked at me with a vacant stare so I proceeded to put him out of his misery.

Your par for that hole is 5 not 4, with your handicap you can take a 5 and still not lose anything in relation to your handicap. So every time you stand on that tee and think about making 4 you are making it harder for yourself. Now if you stood on that tee and said to yourself it's a par 5 how would you feel then? I am sure you would be more relaxed and think that's not hard I can do that, and that is exactly how you should approach every hole you play.

And therein lies the problem most mid to high handicap golfers have, they are not playing their own game they are trying to play scratch golf. This is where good course management and thinking comes in to play.

What you should do is make out a personal scorecard relative to your handicap. In Jim's case there is only one hole on the golf course that he is expected to par and that is stroke index 18 the easiest hole on the course. If your golf course has a par of 70 and your handicap is 15 then your par for the course is 85. I hope you get my drift here because it's an important part of managing your game.

I know it goes against the grain but it will make each hole seem easier and allow you to play with more confidence and relax. Instead of getting out the driver on these tough longer holes and then messing up because you feel you must try to get a par, take clubs you are more confident with. Now you have your new way of thinking with regard to par you will be surprised at how much easier it is to play each individual golf hole. A par 4 on the course where you have a stroke means 3 shots to reach the green and 2 putts. Think this way and you will be pleasantly surprised how many times you make an actual par, which in your case means... BIRDIE....

I finished off by saying to Jim think about your approach to the golf course now! Standing on par 3's that now become par 4's.. How much easier is that on the mind? With a nod of thanks and a gleam in his eye Jim wandered off to the bar to join his friends and have a well-earned drink.

This great game of golf is hard enough without putting undue pressure on yourself. Manage your own game better by thinking correctly and your course management will improve along with your enjoyment of the game. Look at each hole on your golf course in a different light. Draw up your own personal scorecard.. NOW!!

How to Practice Golf the Right Way

By Bill Bicknell

Most people focus only on their full swing when they practice. Not only do most average golfers skip short game practice completely, but they usually spend most of their time practicing with the driver, which hurts their game more than anything. You must divide your practice time between short game and full swing practice. Actually, you should spend two thirds of your time on short game for maximum improvement, because two-thirds of the strokes you take in a round of golf will be either putts, chips, or pitches.

There are two modes of golf practice: Golf Swing mode, and Target Golf mode. These two modes are on absolute opposite sides of the golf spectrum, and you must discipline yourself to work in only one mode at a time. A good practice session, however, will include both modes of practice.

When you are in Golf Swing mode, you will work on and evaluate mechanics only. While working on mechanics, ignore both contact and ball flight. As you've already heard, if you really want to learn fast, slow everything down and use some sort of feedback mechanism so that you know you are practicing correctly. Do your drills. Do your late speed drill until you graduate to full speed. Practice with full attention and intention: Know exactly what you are working on and practice precisely. Constantly remind yourself of what your intentions are, and attend to your intentions.

When you swing the club, don't just swing it around. Feel the club in your hands. Concentrate on increasing your awareness of the club head. Turn your head and watch the club move. Try to bridge the gap between what you see the club doing and what you feel it is doing.

In the beginning of your golf education, spend seventy-five percent of your time on drills to learn your mechanics. As your mechanics improve, gradually lower that percentage until you spend only about twenty-five percent of your practice time drilling. After you've put in your time drilling, go on to ball flight control practice, which I have included under Golf Swing practice, although it is the link between the two modes.

In ball flight control practice, I want you to work on your club path and face angle to create a draw. Educate your hands. You can teach yourself to create any kind of shot you want. You will eventually need to be able to make the ball curve in both directions, so go ahead and play around. See what you can make the ball do and have fun. It's really neat to be able to control the ball, and when you can control the ball a little, you are ready for Target Golf.

When you practice, you must be certain that your alignment is correct. Alignment is critical. You must know where you are lined up to evaluate your ball flight.

Help yourself align to the target by laying down a club parallel to the target line. You don't have to stand so that your feet touch the club, but you should be within three or four inches of it. Imagine train tracks running to the target: your feet go on one track and the ball goes on the other. Always practice with alignment clubs. Alignment is one of the easiest fundamentals to get right, and the easiest to get wrong. Misalignment is the single greatest cause of poor shots once you get your swing down.

OK, good alignment is now a given, and you can now work on getting the ball to the target by going through your pre-shot routine every time you try to hit a ball to a target, for the rest of your life!

When in Target Golf mode, use your pre-shot routine, and concentrate only on the target. It is pretty simple, folks. Practice picking out a target and concentrating solely on the target while you swing, just as you will need to do on the golf course. Target Golf requires that you trust your swing, whatever state of repair it is in, regardless of whether you still have things to work on. Trusting your swing takes practice, too, so make sure that you spend ample practice time just focusing on the target and trusting your swing.

Target Golf practice is just like playing a round of golf on the range. Practicing in this way will greatly help you bring your best golf to the golf course. I'm sure you know many people who are what I call "Range Pros." They look great on the range, but fall apart on the course. These folks just need to change the way they practice to greatly improve their game. The Pre-Shot routine is the key to getting your mind focused on the task at hand, so that you give yourself the opportunity to play your best golf. That's all you can ask of yourself.

Key Reasons To Get A Golf Handicap

By Jack Moorehouse

Most players who take golf lessons from me don't have an official golf handicap. That comes as no surprise to me since most recreational golfers don't have a golf handicap anyways. Of the more than 26 million golfers in the United States (adults who played at least one round of golf during a season), less than 20 percent have a handicap, according to statistics provided by the United States Golf Association (USGA) in 2003. And that's just the U.S.

Reasons exist for not having a golf handicap vary. Some players feel they're not good enough to have one. Others feel that having one is pretentious. Then there are those who feel that going through the effort to get one is just too much trouble or are intimidated by the paperwork involved. Despite how these golfers feel, the benefits of having a handicap far outweigh the reasons not to have one.

A Golf Handicap Defined

A golf handicap measures a player's potential ability to achieve a certain score compared to an expert-amateur's ability to do the same. Defined by a number, a handicap allows golfer's to compete on an equal basis, which is great when playing in tournaments or other golf venues.

The key, of course, is that a handicap creates a level playing field, so players of unequal ability can play at the same course on equal footing, making the match fairer and the game more enjoyable. Nothing in golf, however, says you must have one to play. Golfers who don't have one violate no rule of the game.

But one of the biggest reasons for having a handicap and the reason I encourage players who attend my golf instruction sessions to get a handicap is that it can help improve your game. By posting your scores whether by using an online tool or submitting them to someone in person you'll have a highly effective tool for tracking your improvement and spotting playing trends. You'll also have a goal to shoot for as you work on your game.

For example, let's say you decide to improve your short game. If over the course of a year or so and after dozens of practice sessions, you see your handicap dropping you know you are on the right practice track. If you don't see it dropping, either you're not putting in enough practice, practicing correctly, or working on the right thing. You can then make changes to and see how that works.

How To Get A Handicap

Most players who join a private country club are automatically put on the handicap roster. But players who are not members of a country club must initiate the effort. The most likelyýbut not the only way of doing that is through a sanctioned golf organization, like the USGA.

The USGA, for instance, calculates a handicap using a fairly complex formula that's applied to the 10 best of a golfer's last 20 rounds. Getting a USGA handicap requires membership in a club. But it can be a friendly golf group at your local public course or your own ad-hoc assemblage of 10 golfers, which would form a "club without real estate."

Determine a Golf Handicap Explained

by Troy Sevine

One way that a golfer is able to measure their level of ability against other players is by using the golf handicap system. Different players may have very different levels of ability yet they would still enjoy playing a game against one another. Golf can be very intense and there is a need to be able to match players up against one another to prevent a one sided victory. The golf handicapping system is what is used to determine the levels of ability in a situation like this.

The handicapping system allows players of less proficiency to acquire strokes without counting them towards the final score as they are playing against someone else who has a much higher skill level. A fairly simple mathematical formula is used to determine a player's most likely potential based upon the scores which they have previously finished with. It is thought that a golfer will only play to their exact handicap less than twenty five percent of the time. This means that technically, in order to stay accurate, the handicap must be constantly adjusted based upon the end result of each new game the player is involved in.

There does exist a certain course rating and slope rating that lies within the handicapping system. The actual slope rating is a mathematical ratio which represents the overall difficulty of a given course. The slope rating of around one hundred and twelve is considered to be somewhat of an average rating. On the other hand, course rating is simply expressed as normal strokes. Since this is all based around the perceived difficulty rating of a particular course, this will not vary nearly as widely as the slope rating will.

An overall estimate of what a golfer may happen to shoot in a highly successful golf game is called the Handicap Index. There exists a very common misconception that this represents the player's average score. The reality is that this fairly complex calculation is just a representation of the particular individual's likely performance during a golf game. However, this is also a useful method to determine a course handicap, and this is used to establish how many basic strokes a golfer may be able to take, on which specific holes they take them, and during which exact rounds of the match they will apply to.

Fortunately, the normal golf handicap formula is based upon, and also tracked, through the results of score cards. There are many proponents of the game who choose to analyze their game results well beyond what the score cards show, the general basics are nicely represented and can be used as a solid foundation for determining an overall golf handicap.

How to Play Golf

by George Sandler

The process of learning to how to play golf will be much easier. One of the biggest problems that beginners have when learn how to play golf is they tend to look up when they actually go to strike the ball. This is disastrous since a stroke can be counted even if you do not hit the ball! Make it a point to look down after hitting the golf ball. Your hips need to be rotated after hitting. Right from the start when you are learning golf, the extended arm position during a swing really helps to improve your swing. After a successful hit, count to five before you raise your eyes upwards.

Missing the putts is common for most beginners learning golf while being out on the green. There is a simple way to deal with this-simply ensures you are standing in the putting stance and look straight at the top of the ball. You will likely hit the target this way. The success you achieve will steer you towards greater accomplishments.

Sometimes with novices learning golf, the ball goes into another direction than the one you are targeting. This is very simple to remedy if you are patient. Proper stance is essential to perform the perfect stroke. You need to ensure that you are taking the time to carefully analyze your stance before each swing so you may need to back up a bit to ensure that you are not hitting the ball from the side of the club. This will definitely throw the ball to the side of the green. You need to develop the strong and solid swing in order to throw the ball into the direction you want it to go. It is irritating when hooking becomes a recurring condition for someone learning golf. Sometimes the wrong stance can cause this to occur, other times it is the way beginners hit the ball that causes hooking to be a problem. Do not grip the club too strongly as this can be another (often) overlooked problem. Of course, it goes without saying that practice is crucial to improve your game of golf.

Fore! Golf Equipment Buying Guide – Avoid the Sandtraps!

PJ Forbes

Golf is a popular and relaxing sport, but to play the game well, you need the right golf equipment. This buying guide will take you through the different types of golf equipment available, from balls and bags to clubs and clothes.

What equipment do I need to play golf?

Golf Clubs:

Usually a golfers bag contains fourteen or more clubs. Select golf clubs based on your ability. A half set combination of clubs is ideal for a novice and will help a beginner develop a better swing. You need a good variety of clubs with the right combination of shafts and club heads for different shots around the course. For left-handers, there are specially designed sets of clubs. The most common types of golf clubs are drivers, irons, woods, wedges and putters.

Drivers:

You can choose from steel, titanium or composite drivers. The head of a golf driver comes in different shapes like squares, triangles and scoop backs. Golf drivers are made of different metals and vary in weight according to the material used. Heavy headed golf drivers are preferred by many players. Steel shafts are typically used by experienced golfers while lighter graphite shafts are used mostly by beginners. Graphite shafts can be rather expensive and are best for beginners who are serious about improving their game. Cheap golf sets with graphite shafts are readily available.

Woods:

Woods are made from either titanium or stainless steel. Titanium woods are pricier of the two. If you prefer a classic look, then opt for stainless steel woods. They are heavier with a more traditional design. A 2, 3 or 4 wood can be used in place of a driver or long iron for tee shots. Woods numbered 5 through 11 are best used to get your ball out of the rough.

Irons:

Iron clubs are great for shots when you are 125 to 200 yards from the green. They are a staple among clubs and can be made of forged or cast iron. High handicap players should opt for cavity back irons which are designed to improve your game. Mid handicap golfers are better off experimenting with hybrid irons and low handicap players should use blade irons.

Wedges:

There are several different types of wedges, such as the pitching wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge and gap wedge, all of which have different lofts. They have different finishes like chrome, nickel and beryllium copper. These scoring clubs are a vital part of game and should be used when you are 120 yards or less from the hole.

Putters:

Once you hit the green, it is time to pull out your putter. A putter is the shortest golf club of any set and generally the most used. You have many options to choose from. Peripheral weighted putters are better for players with an in and out stroke while mallet headed putters can be used by players with a straight through and back stroke. The traditional blade putter, however, is always the safest design as it is the easiest to use.

Golf Balls:

Golf balls are classified as one-piece, two-piece, three-piece or four-piece based on their construction. Beginners should use one-piece balls. Two-piece balls are more commonly used by the average player for every day golfing. Three-piece balls give seasoned players more control. Four-piece balls are much rarer. Their four layer construction makes them the softest feeling golf ball you can play with. If you are a hard hitter, you will most likely prefer a heavier ball. Soft balls spin well whereas hard balls cover more distance.

Golf Bags:

Just like any other golfer, you will need a bag to store your clubs, shoes and balls as you go back and forth from home to a golf course. The most common types of golf bags are stand bags, cart bags and staff bags.

Stand Bags:

A stand bag has legs which keeps it upright while you golf. Select a lightweight stand bag with two wide straps rather than one so that the weight gets evenly distributed.

Cart Bags:

Cart bags have many pockets and are more rigid than stand bags. They are made for golfers who use carts and buggies to get around the course. Female golfers and older players tend to prefer cart bags. However, they usually are quite expensive.

Staff Bags:

Staff bags can get very heavy, as they have numerous pockets and enough space for a full set of fourteen clubs. They are modeled after professional golf bags and are often made from leather. If you use a caddy and have the money, nothing else comes close to owning a staff bag.

Golf Gloves:

Golf gloves help you get a good grip on your golf clubs to provide better control over your game. Although some prefer to play without gloves, they are highly recommended for novice to intermediate players. There are leather, synthetic, all-weather and winter gloves that you can choose from.

Golf Shoes:

You can wear classic golf shoes, sandals or golf boots when you are out on a course. Look for shoes that can withstand the wear and tear of walking all eighteen holes and are waterproof. Shoes that let your feet breathe are ideal for summers and provide the most comfort.

Golf Clothes:

Your golfing wardrobe should contain outerwear for every season. If you are the kind of golf lover that plays no matter what the weather is like, you will need waterproof, rainproof and windproof golf clothes. Take care that you are comfortable with your apparel during a swing. There are now many outlets to buy golf equipment online if you want to keep up with the trends.

K Wizzle

Does dropping your handicap by AT LEAST 7 strokes in a week sound impossible? This downloadable e-book, The Simple Golf Swing by David Nevogt, guarantees to do so. I thought this might me a load of crap at first, but I was pleasantly surprised.

So what makes The Simple Golf Swing so different from other books?

The Simple Golf Swing is about using the spine as an axis to promote consistency and to keep you on the correct swing plane. You'll learn the correct hand action so that you can add distance to every shot. You'll learn the correct timing to get straight ball flight, and consistent direction. You get a step-by-step guide on the full swing, a step-by-step guide on the short game, a mental guide, and personal coaching to make all of this happen quickly and easily.

Some of the things that you will learn:

* Unique setup
* Grip
* Timing Drill
* Alignment Drill
* Backswing (2 unique steps)
* Downswing (1 unique step)
* Follow through (1 unique step)

You will be able to learn and embrace each of these steps quickly. They are each crucial to lowering your handicap and making solid impact with the ball. The Simple Golf Swing will teach you a controlled swing. The advantage of a controlled swing is that you will be able to increase or decrease your swing speed, according to the current situation, and yardage variances.Whether you are hitting a driver or a nine iron, you can put the exact same swing on the ball and know that you are going to make solid contact with the ball. Consistency is the goal with The Simple Golf Swing, and that's why you will benefit from it.

The Simple Golf Swing is also different because it was built for the Bogey + golfer. It's developed for the majority of golfers; the golfers who want to break 80, 85, or 90. It brakes down the golf swing, and builds it from the bottom up so that the average golfer now has a solid reference point for every component of the golf swing.

Five Keys to Making Your Swing Great

Most golf teachers can quickly tell if you have a solid golf swing. All they have to do is watch you swing. The ability to tell if you have a great swing isn't instinctive. It comes from years of studying the swing's mechanics and from giving hundreds of golf lessons and explaining golf tips. It takes a lot of hard work to be able to spot a great swing. But the work ultimately pays off in knowing what makes a golf swing great.

Recreational golfers-even those with low golf handicaps-can't always tell when a golf swing is great. That's because they really don't know what the elements of a great golf swing are. They play by "feel" so to speak. That's unfortunate. Knowing the elements of a great swing provides a target for golfers to work toward in perfecting their swings. Eventually, the work that goes into perfect a golf swing improves their ballstriking and their golf handicaps. Let's examine the elements of a great swing.

Balance Throughout

The Swing Balance is critical to a great swing. It's among the first things teachers notice when giving golf lessons. Balance throughout the swing stems from a good set-up featuring the following items:

* Head comfortably positioned behind the ball * Back shoulder slightly lower than the front shoulder * Both shoulders aligned parallel left of target * Neutral hands positioned just inside the front leg * Knees slightly flexed with the chest stacked above it

* Feet positioned slightly wider than shoulder width

A set-up featuring these elements provides great balance. Without it, you'll never find the position you need to properly deliver the clubhead.

A Great Takeaway A solid takeaway also keys a great swing, The subject of many golf lessons, a solid takeaway features a clubhead that travels back along the target line, with the face remaining pointed at the golf ball until the wrists hinge. The hands and shoulders must be in "sync" during the takeaway. In addition, the arms must remain ahead of the chest and the knees must stay slightly flexed. The front knee points at the ball. A good takeaway produces the next element of a great golf swing-a tight coil at the top of the swing.

A Great Coil At The Top Covered in many golf lessons, the coil at the top of the swing is the seat of power. A great top position also is helps maintain your spine angle. The key to a great top position is to rotate your body behind the ball within the circle defined by your hips. A great coil features a front shoulder rotated to a point directly below the chin, the shaft lying parrellel to the ground directly above the back shoulder, the back knee comfortably accepting the transfer of weight while holding off the tendency to straighten, and the front knee still pointing at the golf ball.

Fluid Downswing mpact is referred to as "the moment of truth." But it's the downswing that determine what tat moment of truth will be. If you downswing sequence is fluid, contact with the ball is solid. The priority in the downswing is to keep the club on the proper plane, with the shaft sitting between your forearms on the way down. A key to achieving a fluid downswing is to keep your front shoulder from spinning open too quickly. The hips and shoulders need to stay in sync and your feet stay planted. A fluid downswing also features rigid spine angles, flexed knees, and a steady head, just like you read about in golf tips.

Solid Impact Key features of a solid impact features the back shoulder slightly lower than the front, forming a wall through which to hit. The front shoulder, arm, and hip form a straight line. In addition, the hands have returned to the same position they held at address, the front wrist is as flat as can be, and both hands are leading the clubhead into the ball. The right foot has transferred weight to the left without the body or head moving ahead of the ball.

The golf swing is simple. It's merely a turn backward and forward, with your front knee serving as serving as the hub of both turns. But achieving this simplicity isn't easy. Knowing the elements of a great golf swing helps. Once achieved, a great golf swing improves ballstriking and helps pare down your golf handicap.

I fortunately wish to speak almost something there is very electrifying to me to be see of. Hold you always interpreted region in a 300 plot in bowling or hit the perfective golf shooting resulting in a hole in one?

For me I hold unforeseen all kinds of hole in help in my life. I've personally hold 4 hole in ones. I however recall my moment hole in one. It was on a 220yard 6th hole par 3. I secondhand my 3 wood. It happened support in 1991 once the world naturally I however play on now had no fairway lacrimation arrangement in place. In the center of summertime it gets stone difficult and of naturally you get a lot of wander on your ball.

Back so I was known in the golf club as "King of the low ball. " I ever hit as one of my golf clubs on a low flight to get there other roll.

That is why now I however fight in hit the high-pitched trajectory, because now Southey hold the lacrimation arrangement in place. If person was uncut in face of me support then, I likely fortunately cut there individual in one-half at the waist. My baseball fortunately ne'er go any higher.

So, I steed off and I recall Southey lowered workings on repair the ground. There was likely a 4 ft soil pile in the country of the gynecologist tee box. My baseball just lost the top of the soil pile day out almost 120 yardstick and ran wish a frightened laborer lapin for the finish 100 yards. It disappeared as presently as it ran up shape the green.

You see tonight fix is real apartment hit no problem about it. At the sentence I was playing hit an orangish vividness golf ball, abiding tonight sentence menstruum Krauthead Pate made it real stylish to play hit another vividness golf balls.

There was no one about the park wave us up and the peripheral imagination didn't permit us to see across the green.

As my four walked up to the park Southey unholy me to go beginning to see if it was in the hole. Certainly plenty the orangish golf baseball was in the fathom of the cup. Fairly a spirit of euphoria! Is Getting a Golf Handicap Really That Important?

Many golfers when they first begin the game of golf, are simply focused on learning the game. They choose to play for a variety of reasons: for business networking, social gatherings, or just to have fun. But after a few rounds of golf, a player interested in improving her game and playing with a variety of players at different skill levels, begins to think about getting a handicap.

What is a golf handicap?

According to Wikipedia, "A handicap is a numerical measure of an amateur golfer's playing ability based on the tees played for a given course. It is used to calculate a net score from the number of strokes actually played, thus allowing players of different proficiency to play against each other on somewhat equal terms. The higher the handicap of a player, the poorer the player is relative to those with lower handicaps. Handicaps are administered by golf clubs or national golf associations. Exact rules relating to handicaps can vary from country to country.

Handicap systems are not used in professional golf.

If you want to play with golfers of different abilities, getting a handicap is the only fair way to compete.

The good thing is that a player's handicap is NOT the average of her scores... but rather an indicator of a player's POTENTIAL. The USGA refers to this as the "average best." The player who plays to the best of her ability, taking handicaps into consideration, wins the round.

When calculating a player's handicap, the difficulty of the courses played is also taken into consideration. The course slope and rating are part of the formula, so that a player who regularly plays on difficult courses will have that calculated into her final GHIN (Golf Handicap and Information Network) number.

How Do You Get A Handicap?

Most players can register for a handicap rating through their local golf club. You can also apply directly online at http://www.ghin.com

Once you have a handicap registration, you post your scores either by using your club's handicap scoring system at the club house, or post directly at the GHIN website. It takes several rounds before a handicap can be formulated, but once it is, you can use that number when playing at your own or any golf course.

Having a handicap is also a great way to measure your improvement in the game. We encourage you to get one.
